NHS prescription charges from 1 May 2024

The National Health Service (Charges for Drugs and Appliances) (Amendment) Regulations 2024 were laid before Parliament on 3 April 2024. The regulations set out the new charges for NHS prescription charges in England.

Charges for prescriptions and prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) will increase by 2.59% (rounded to the nearest 5 pence) from 1 May 2024.

A prescription will cost £9.90 for each medicine or appliance dispensed, an increase of 25 pence. The 3-month PPC will cost £32.05 and the 12-month PPC will cost £114.50.

The hormone replacement therapy (HRT) PPC will cost £19.80, an increase of 50 pence. This is because the rate is set at twice the single prescription charge.

Junior Doctor strike
13th Apr 2023

Important information Regarding Junior Doctor Strikes

The British Medical Association (BMA) has advised that they are taking industrial action for a 96 hour period from 06:59 on Tuesday 11 April until 06:59am on Saturday 15 April 2023. As a result, a number of BMA members will be on strike on these days. This includes trainee doctors that work in GP practices. Please be aware that this may mean that less appointments are available on these days, but we are doing all we can to maintain access to care for our patients.

Please attend your appointment as normal unless you are contacted and told otherwise. We may experience a higher volume of calls and contact from patients making enquiries than usual during these dates, please bear with us and be patient during this time. We apologise for any inconvenience, please be kind to our colleagues when you speak to them.

Patients are being reminded that their local NHS is here for them to receive urgent and emergency care during the industrial action – but are being asked to support NHS staff by using services wisely and attending appointments as planned.

Here’s how you can help your NHS during planned industrial action:
  • Continue to come forward if you need urgent medical care, especially in emergency and life-threatening cases. Your NHS is here for you when you need it – especially if you or your loved ones become seriously ill or injured, or their life is at risk.
  • To help your NHS to focus on patients who need emergency care most, please only call 999 or attend A&E departments for serious accidents and genuine emergencies.
  • If your relative is due to be discharged from hospital and needs to be collected, please do whatever you can to help bring them home as early as possible. This will help hospital teams to free-up a hospital bed for someone waiting to be admitted.
  • Please consider the full range of NHS services that are available to you. When you need urgent medical attention but it’s not an emergency, alternative support is available by visiting NHS111 online or by calling 111.
  • Pharmacies can also offer over-the-counter advice and treat common illnesses such as colds, sore throats, stings and allergies.

Strep A
6th Dec 2022

Group A Strep - What you need to know

Group A streptococcus (GAS) is a common bacteria. Lots of us carry it in our throats and on our skin and it doesn’t always result in illness. However, GAS does cause a number of infections, some mild and some more serious.

The most serious infections linked to GAS come from invasive group A strep, known as iGAS.

It’s always concerning when a child is unwell. GAS infections cause various symptoms such as sore throat, fever, chills and muscle aches.

As a parent, if you feel that your child seems seriously unwell, you should trust your own judgement.

Contact NHS 111 or your GP if:
  • your child is getting worse
  • your child is feeding or eating much less than normal
  • your child has had a dry nappy for 12 hours or more or shows other signs of dehydration
  • your baby is under 3 months and has a temperature of 38C, or is older than 3 months and has a temperature of 39C or higher
  • your baby feels hotter than usual when you touch their back or chest, or feels sweaty
  • your child is very tired or irritable

Call 999 or go to A&E if:
  • your child is having difficulty breathing – you may notice grunting noises or their tummy sucking under their ribs
  • there are pauses when your child breathes
  • your child’s skin, tongue or lips are blue
  • your child is floppy and will not wake up or stay awake
High BP
25th Nov 2022

High Blood Pressure: The Silent Killer

High blood pressure, or hypertension, rarely has noticeable symptoms. But if untreated, it increases your risk of serious problems such as heart attacks and strokes

The only way of knowing whether you have high blood pressure is to have a blood pressure test.

All adults over 40 are advised to have their blood pressure checked at least every 5 years.

Getting this done is easy and could save your life.

You can get your blood pressure tested at a number of places, including:
  • at your GP surgery
  • at some pharmacies
  • as part of your NHS Health Check
  • in some workplaces
You can also check your blood pressure yourself with a home blood pressure monitor.
Recycle Inhalers
24th Nov 2022

Not sure what to do with your used inhalers?

Inhalers cannot be recycled or disposed of with household waste so patients should be encouraged to return them to pharmacies.

What many people don’t know is that inhalers can be bad for the environment. This is because they contain a propellant that helps to deliver the medication to your lungs. The propellant used in inhalers is a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), which damages the ozone layer and contributes to climate change

There are a few things you can do to reduce the environmental impact of your asthma inhalers:
Keep your inhaler clean. This will help it last longer and means you won’t need to use as much medication.

  • It is important to clean your inhaler before returning it or disposing of it. This will help to ensure that harmful chemicals are not released into the environment. Follow these steps to clean your inhaler:
  • Remove the mouthpiece cover.
  • Separate the metal.
  • Rinse the plastic part with warm water for 30 seconds.
  • Dry your inhaler before using it again.
  • Use the inhaler correctly. Don’t waste any of the medication by not using it in the right way.
  • Have a regular asthma review with a nurse to check that you are taking the correct strength of the medication. This may mean that you can reduce your reliance on inhalers and therefore produce less waste.
  • Have a spare inhaler, so you don’t need to get a new one every time yours runs out.
Blood donation

Want to Give Blood?

Stocks of blood are critically low. If you're O negative or O positive, we need you right now so we can get lifesaving blood to people in need.

Tens of thousands of people are doing something amazing by registering to join our growing community of blood donors - ready to save lives when the NHS needs them.

At the moment we particularly need:

  • Male donors - men can donate more often than women
  • Black donors - Ro blood is needed and a common type for black donors
  • O negative donors - hospitals need this blood type most regularly, as it can be given to all patients

Please register if you are in one of these groups.

Checking your BP at Home
5th Sep 2022

Know Your Numbers! Week (5th - 11th September)

This Week is "Know Your Numbers! Week" 5th - 11th September.

Know Your Numbers! Week is all about Blood Pressure. It is important to know about your blood pressure because:
  • 1 in 2 strokes and heart attacks are the result of high blood pressure.
  • 1 in 3 adults in the UK have high blood pressure.
  • 1 in 2 adults with high blood pressure don’t know they have it or aren’t receiving treatment.
  • 6 million people in the UK alone have high blood pressure and don’t know it.
  • £2.1 billion – that’s how much high blood pressure costs the NHS every year.

Because high blood pressure usually has no symptoms, the first sign of it could be a heart attack or stroke. It can cause kidney disease, dementia and other illnesses too. But these tragedies can be prevented with medications and lifestyle changes.

Below you can find a leaflet which contains lots of useful information to help you take your BP readings at home correctly so you can get to know your numbers

Need ongoing support after being discharged from hospital?

No one enjoys having to stay in hospital and you'll likely want to know when you'll be discharged. It’s important for your recovery to leave hospital when you no longer need hospital care. If you need ongoing support, this will be discussed with you.

Hospital isn't the best place once you no longer need hospital care. The longer an older person stays in hospital, the more likely they are to experience reduced mobility, falls and a reduction in mental wellbeing.

50% of patients leaving hospital will need some support to recover at home. If you are offered a care package once you no longer need hospital care, please take it. It can be revised after you leave hospital. Please find useful information here @age_uk

Alternative services

Alternative Services

You may have seen on the news already that the NHS is experiencing high demand including Nottingham University Hospitals and Sherwood Forest Hospitals.

We thought it would be very useful to share with you a quick guide to health services.
If you need urgent care that isn't an emergency, please
visit NHS 111 first. You’ll get the advice you need and if you need to be seen, they direct you to the right service for you. This ensures that you are being seen in the right place at the right time.
If you have a minor illness such as a cough, cold, tummy trouble, sore throat, aches + pains, your nearest pharmacy can help you. You don’t need to book or to wait to be seen. If your symptoms suggest that it’s something more serious, a pharmacist can tell you what to do next

Did you know that as well as an Urgent Treatment Unit on London Road in Nottingham, there is also one in Ilkeston - DE7 8LN? The one on London Road is a walk-in Centre and in Ilkeston you should book via NHS 111 first. Both can treat you for minor illnesses and injuries
Broken bones, strains and sprains, Minor burns or scalds, Skin infections or bites, Eye infections or minor eye injuries, Minor head injuries. These can ALL be treated at the Urgent Treatment Unit on London Road- NG2 4LA. No need to book and you can get sorted quicker.

Follow the link to watch a quick video about urgent treatment centres.

Dr Jill Langridge Retirment

We would like to let our patients know that after almost 28 years of service at Keyworth Medical Practice and more latterly Village Health Group (VHG), Dr Langridge will be stepping down from her role as GP Partner at the end of March. Whilst sadly Dr Langridge will no longer be seeing patients as a GP at VHG, we are pleased to still have her as part of the team as she moves on to take a more specialist clinical role at VHG which will be aligned to her interests and expertise in Gynaecology.

It has been a privilege to have Dr Langridge as part of the GP partnership , those that have worked alongside her know that she strives for excellence in patient care and that she has given her all over the years through her true and unwavering dedication to General Practice. Her continued care and compassion for so many grateful patients will be sorely missed.

Social Prescribing
10th Dec 2020

New Service

Social prescribing is a relatively new service, which is designed to help people address their physical health, mental health and general well-being by connecting them to support within the community.

Social prescribers listen and put people in touch with the groups and activities that might make them feel better.
A social prescribing link worker could connect someone to:

📞A community group
🎨A new activity
🏏A local club
👩‍⚖️Help accessing legal advice or debt counselling

They might just help find information and guidance by using a bit of inside knowledge on individual situations or what local resources there are.
Rushcliffe Social Prescriber, Gwynneth Owen, says:
“We always say it’s the kind of support that doesn’t come in a tablet or a bottle of pills, but what we do provide hopefully complements clinical interventions. It’s a holistic approach that really gives patients the confidence to have more control over their health and well-being.
We help people achieve their goals, whether it’s losing weight, taking more exercise, managing their anxiety or getting information about benefits.”

Village Health Group Merger & Our Patients

On April 1st 2020, East Leake Medical Group merged with Keyworth Medical Group to become Village Health Group (VHG). The merger has provided us with an exciting opportunity to review and improve the services we provide. The practice has branches in East Leake, Keyworth, Ruddington and Sutton Bonington.

Over the last few months, despite the COVID 19 pandemic the practice has been working hard to review the service we offer.

The COVID 19 pandemic has been a very challenging time for patients, carers and our practice staff. Throughout this time our surgeries have been open to provide help and advice to all patients.

The pandemic has impacted the way which we offer care. In line with local and national guidance we have been providing telephone appointments initially and inviting patients into the surgery and providing home visits only when needed. This is to reduce the numbers of patients in our surgeries in order to reduce infection risks. This has provided positive opportunities for changing the way we consult with our patients. We have introduced video consultations and have the technology to send and receive questionnaires, information leaflets, medical certificates and photographs via mobile phones.

The reintroduction of routine services is well underway. Patients are now being offered appointments for long term condition reviews, smears, contraceptive services, joint injections and minor surgery.

We now move into a critical time as we approach autumn and winter, and the flu season. Patients will receive information about our flu vaccination programme over the coming weeks.

We have designed a patient survey to understand how the changes during COVID 19 have impacted patients and their carer’s. We will use this feedback to help develop our services moving forward. Many of the changes may need to remain in place for the foreseeable future due to the on-going pandemic. However we are aware that not all patients comfortable with these new types of consultations and we are committed to providing care for all patients according to their needs and preferences.

We are also introducing a regular newsletter to keep patients and carers updated about the practice services.

Throughout the pandemic we have been looking after all members of our practice team. We have had regular meetings to share information and discuss how to implement frequently changing guidance. All staff have undergone risk assessments and we have worked with them to ensure they feel safe at work.

We are very grateful for the cooperation, and understanding of our patients and their families during this time. The surgery team has responded magnificently to a seemingly interminable and very difficult set of conditions and pressures. Your tolerance and good will has made much easier than it otherwise might have been.

We would also like to acknowledge the support we have received from the local Primary Care Network, neighbouring practices with whom we have collaborated closely and the Clinical Commissioning Group.

Covid-19 Precautions

The practice team at Village Health Group have been working hard to ensure that the medical practice remains a safe place for its patients and staff.

We have been carrying out a number of risk assessments to ensure that we operate in line with Government Guidelines regarding Covid-19.

We would like to reassure our patients that a number of actions have been taken to ensure the protection of our staff and patients such as:

  • Clinical staff will be wearing PPE in line with infection control guidelines when seeing patients
  • Patients are requested to attend appointments alone where possible and if appropriate
  • We are asking all patients visiting the practice to wear a mask or face covering (such as a scarf or bandana)
  • We are asking patients to arrive on time for their appointment, please do not arrive too early or late to avoid unnecessary prolonged contact with other patients in the waiting area
  • Increased cleaning measures in line with infection control guidelines throughout the practice
  • Protection screens at reception
  • Socially distanced seating in the waiting area
  • Hand gel and sanitisation products available for patients in the waiting room and clinical rooms
  • Zoned entrances and toilet facilities/ one way system implemented

The practice is currently operating a telephone triage appointment system. If you require an appointment with a doctor or nurse, please telephone reception who will arrange a telephone appointment in the first instance.

We would ask that patients do not attend the practice unless a face to face appointment has been arranged with a doctor or nurse.
